I don't appreciate the rush to censor discussion of an important national issue. I understand that this is a social community focused on cars, but it is still a social community, and as long as the discussion is civil and respectful and maybe limited to a single post for the sake of clarity and clutter reduction, then the discussion and debate should be allowed. Thanks.

And yet other random bullshit is allowed to be posted all the time.
![]() 11/24/2014 at 23:06 |

The problem is, whenever something like this happens, the discussion is rarely civil.

This has been talked about already.

That's what the Cigar Lounge is for, but it doesn't seem like the mods want it there much either.

It'll go from civil to all-out rage faster than a GT-R reaches 60.

Ask the mods why they don't want it... they will tell you why.

But what about the cars on fire?
![]() 11/24/2014 at 23:09 |

Well said. Off topic posts aren't against the rules, but they seem to get deleted when people disagree with them.
To pretend as though race issues simply don't exist is an abuse of white privilege. Censoring this issue is exercising that abuse in one of the worst ways. This issue deserves a discussion. We as a majority white blog might be able to pretend like these issues don't exist, but people of color can't. They live it every day.

I'm glad you understand it.

I wasnt aware of the Cigar Lounge? Kinja is a maze of sub-blogs these days...
![]() 11/24/2014 at 23:12 |

What about them?
![]() 11/24/2014 at 23:13 |

Exactly. One only has to look at what Oppo's demographics are to understand why topics that involve race or gender are generally frowned upon here. How dare we try to confront pervasive social issues, amirite?

Can we post pictures of them?

I say w/o context sure always neat to see burning cars.

Can't there be a separate blog maybe called 'sewer works'? A place where shit fights can happen, you enter (or not) at your own risk? Seems like there is a need for people to discuss touchy subjects.
![]() 11/24/2014 at 23:21 |

The problem, is that the moderators enjoy having power more than they enjoy actually policing off topic crap.

I can get infuriating Ferguson talk on Facebook and literally everywhere else. I can get good car talk on Oppo. I don't see the need to mix them. That said, I'm not gonna just say don't talk about it. I'm just not gonna talk about it here.
![]() 11/24/2014 at 23:24 |

Preach!
I'm sick and tired of Oppo throwing up a peaceful utopian facade. Sorry that all this "cop shooting an unarmed teen he swore to serve and protect" makes all the upper middle class white dudes on Oppo uncomfortable, but this is what's going In the world. Face it or shut the fuck up. Sorry we're shining a light on a sore subject they don't wanna fucking face. But sometimes fate just up and fucks ya. It's the way of the world.
It's an ugly fuckin' place and ignoring the shit doesn't make it not exist.
Wake up, oppo.

They are touchy because they are important.

I agree.

Speaking only for myself. We structured the rules the way we did to allow for this. When there is something which is offtopic and controversial, make it obvious what the topic is, do not present anything which could be construed as an opinion in the subject or the first paragraph that appears.
I presented the following during the last Ferguson uprisings: http://backtalk.kinja.com/the-racism-tha…
I think it's a reasonable approach that meets the requirements that are outlined. Make it clear what is contained within. And be neutral in your initial framing.

It's a cool place to vent, and have mature conversations. You should check it out!

Lol I didn't realize how many times I said fuck in that post until I read it just now. I guess the fuckin Jersey is leaking the fuck out tonight.
Shit.

Dude, let your fuck flag fly! This Texas girl puts aside her Southern manners all the damned time to curse like a sailor. ^_^ And this is definitely a "fuck that noise" moment.
![]() 11/24/2014 at 23:41 |

"fuck flag"
This is what I'm calling the doorknob Sock/tie from now on.
"Seriously? You didn't see that I was flying the fuck flag?"
![]() 11/24/2014 at 23:42 |

Off topic crap doesn't necessarily need to be policed. Oppo is obviously massively car-centric but it is also Jalopnik's off-topic forum, these discussions are allowed, going about it in a shit stirring and/or dickish manner is not.
Posting the picture you did without qualification of your opinion and/or reasoning behind it only serves to rile people up and have them react erratically (read: shit stirring). Try a more reasoned approach and you'll see a reasonable response.
![]() 11/24/2014 at 23:44 |

Hehehe. Yeah... I was playing on the "let your freak flag fly" saying. I saw how it looked and said "fuck it!" and used it anyway. ^_^ Nice to know I'm starting a slang trend, though, lol. Good luck.

Yes...yes it is
Are you personally offended to your core by random bullshit?

child boo!
My freak flag is ALWAYS flying
![]() 11/24/2014 at 23:51 |

I bet you it won't be civil. It never is. This is the internet! I am all for discussing it, I honestly don't really care what people talk about on here.

Boy! Who you callin' child? Lol.
Get it, son!

I think the mods' efforts to curb another Oppo Uprising have been misunderstood, I get what you are saying and thats how I perceived what the mods said. But I think the posts regarding Ferguson should have been edited by the mods to comply with the rules and not deleted. I think the rules violations should have been handled better regarding this issue. Thats just my 2 cents
![]() 11/25/2014 at 00:15 |
|
Editing someone else's post is an integrity issue, since the mods would be effectively putting the words into the original poster's mouth. Deleting a post just sends it to drafts, if I remember correctly, so it gives the offender a chance to edit it and resubmit, or to resubmit as-is to a more appropriate forum (I believe Cigar Lounge?).
![]() 11/25/2014 at 00:16 |
|
Ok, that makes sense. I actually like that solution, but the possibility of resubmitting it after editing it to comply with the rules should be more publicized
![]() 11/25/2014 at 00:21 |
|
Speaking only for myself, again, the only time I have edited others posts. It is clear what was edited and by whom. I think it is very important to make that distinction so that we do not appear to be unnecessarily censoring anyone. Or ever putting words in someone else's mouth. I have removed words in the past. Anything that is added is clearly marked as having come from me. For the exact reason you specified.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 00:28 |

Ah, didn't realize you guys were still doing that, figured you had changed policy or something. Seems like I used to see it a lot more back towards the beginning of Kinja. Absolutely no issue with it, though.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 03:06 |

I created the Cigar Lounge as a place where off off topic discussions such as this could be had without any unecessary interference and leaving Oppo to be a place mainly for car chat. Unfortunately, it rarely gets used for that purpose as my schedule doesn't permit me to advertise it very much. I'll have to do something about that tomorrow. If you want in, let me know.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 10:57 |

Yes.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 14:43 |

Well that's simply unfortunate because I can guarantee not one of us admins will do anything about that.
Oppo ain't bout that life. So either accept it or keep using oppo begrudgingly or (against my desire) leave oppo. Those are your 3 choices
Thanks for being a user, we'd love to keep you

How many admins are there?
Thank you for the kind and honest response to my concern about random stuff being censored or not censored, it's appreciated.

Thanks dude. I'm pretty damn happy you understand.
There may be around a dozen ?
